5-week sewing course in Milton Keynes

This Beginners Sewing Course is designed to gently introduce you to the fundamentals of sewing and garment construction in a supportive, unhurried way.


Each week focuses on learning a new core technique, allowing time to practise, ask questions, and build confidence as you go. Towards the end of the course, these techniques are brought together to create a simple cotton top, which acts as a practical project to showcase everything you’ve learned. For many beginners, this is a really rewarding first garment.


Standard sizing
To keep the focus on learning techniques, the beginners course works with a standard UK size 12 pattern block. This approach helps students understand construction clearly, without the added complexity of fitting adjustments. Working with personal sizing and fit is introduced in more advanced classes.

This course is ideal for those who enjoy learning at a steady pace and want to develop a solid understanding of sewing basics before moving on to more complex garments or personalised fitting.


By the end of the course, you’ll not only have completed a beginner garment, but you’ll also have the confidence and knowledge to continue sewing independently or progress onto further courses.

  • Are happy to work to a standard size while learning
  • Prefer learning techniques properly rather than rushing outcomes

Introduction to Sewing & Getting to Know Your Machine

Begin your sewing journey with an overview of safety, fabrics, and machine basics. Learn to thread your machine, and practice essential stitches like straight, zigzag, and curves. Build confidence through hands-on exercises and leave with homework to reinforce your skills using scrap fabric at home.

Essential Sewing Techniques

Dive into essential sewing techniques, including seam types like straight and French seams, and explore professional seam finishes. Learn basic hand stitching methods such as basting and hemming. Discover how to read sewing patterns, understand layout symbols, and prepare your materials. Bring your fabric ready for garment work.

Pattern Cutting & Garment Prep

You’ll work with a standard size block to learn pattern accuracy, balance, and construction.
This mirrors industry practice and allows you to focus on skill-building rather than sizing.

🧵 - week 4

Garment Construction

Start bringing your garment to life! Assemble your project using techniques such as sewing darts, binding, sleeves, or waistbands, depending on your design. Try on for fit checks and make basic alterations. Continue sewing at home if needed to complete the main construction before the final week.

Finishing Touches & Showcase

Finish your garment with confidence by adding final details like hems, pressing, and optional embellishments. Learn garment care and labeling. Celebrate your progress with a mini class showcase and group photo. Receive your certificate and explore next steps for advancing your sewing skills beyond the beginner level.
